The Innovation ¡ª published by Cell Press in partnership with members of the Youth
Innovation Promotion Association (YIPA),a part of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences¡ªis a new broad-scope, open access journal publishing basic and applied
research that has impact for the benefit of society.
On the cover: About 100,000 years ago, Diverse Homo species coexisted with our own species Homo sapiens. The Harbin cranium, or the Dragon Man, is one of the best preserved Middle Pleistocene human fossils. The cranium has a large cranial capacity falling in the range of modern humans, but is combined with a mosaic of primitive and derived characters. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that the diversification of the Homo genus had a much more distant past than previously presumed. The Harbin cranium and some other Middle Pleistocene human fossils from China represent the third human lineage that is the sister group of H. sapiens and has closer relationships with H. sapiens than Neanderthals with H. sapiens. Multiple Homo lineages in Africa, Asia and Europe probably had a strong capability for long-distance dispersal, but remained in relatively small and isolated populations. Diverse palaeoenvironments in Asia may have produced a varied biogeographic sink for human evolution.

A new conceptual logic model showing how ATP energetically drove the origins of the genetic code and biochemical systems in the protocell based on the ATP matchmaking hypothesis

Sixty years has passed since the cracking of the genetic code by Nirenberg and Matthaei in 1961; however, the origin of the code remains one of the greatest mysteries. It is great for a cell to innovate protein synthesis manipulated by RNA, and vice versa, which is a still unsolved ¡°chicken-and-egg¡± paradox. Finding a solution is of crucial importance. Yet, most biologists hold a pessimistic view that no one knows exactly how the genetic code came into being, as an exact reconstruction of the process of the construction of genetic code may never be possible, or as there is no evidence in physics or chemistry of the control of chemical reactions by a sequence of any sort or of a code between sequences, and many papers have been published with titles indicating that their subject is the origin of the genetic code, while the content actually deals only with the evolution of the genetic code.
