Contribution of UNESCO designated sites to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals

An illustration of the holistic concept describing the contribution of the UDSs to the achievement of the SDGs
UNESCO designated sites (UDSs), including World Heritage Sites (WHSs), Biosphere Reserves (BRs) and Global Geoparks (GGPs), are a collection of focal spots deemed to be holding significant value for sustainable development within diverse environmental, social, and economic contexts.1 However, there is a clear lack of understanding and acknowledgement of UDSs’ value and their specific contributions in policy-making related to development. This is especially true of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are part of the UN’s 2030 Agenda.
